12 Legal Sites That Could Save Your College Career

During those days of the week that college students aren't partying – somewhere between two and five, probably – they're expected to be somewhat responsible adults. Juggling assignments, schedules, finances, and the prospect of life out of school isn't easy, so we scoured the Internet for the best Web sites that make a student's life easier. The fall semester will be here before you know it, so read up now.

World's Most Hideous Gadgets

The World's Ugliest Gadgets
Last week, we linked to CrunchGear's hilarious compilation of the 12 ugliest gadgets ever made, which included the ridiculous 360-degree immersion helmet by Toshiba pictured here.

"We've found the ugliest gadgets ever made, so you don't have to," the article proclaimed. Only, we here at Switched think there are plenty of criminal acts against good taste that weren't mentioned. So, inspired by CrunchGear, we present our nominees for the tech design hall of shame.

The World's Ugliest GadgetsMicrosoft Xbox

Forget the fact that it was heavier than a cinder block. Overlook the reality that you needed Paul Bunyan-sized hands to properly grip the controller. Forgive Microsoft for the hideous font it chose to use for the logo (a variation of which Sony now inexplicably uses for the PS3). Ignore all of these design boo-boos and you're still left with the awful black and lime-green color scheme. It's so offensive, we'd hate it if we were blind.

Top 8 Bluetooth Headsets for Your Cell Phone

Driving Miss Bluetooth

With the criminalization of driving while talking on a cell phone on the rise, the need for a proper wireless headset is starting to creep in. Sure, you could just get one of those headsets that plug right into your phone -- they're certainly affordable -- but anything with wires tends to get caught in your arms, or worse, a gear shift. As such, we recommend going wireless with your phone headsets, and that means getting a Bluetooth headset (in case, you haven't guessed, Bluetooth is a wireless technology that's used in all phone headsets).

But are all Bluetooth headsets created equal? The one that has the best sound or the least interference when you talk into it may not look so chic on your ear. So which headset is for you? We tried out a bunch of the most most popular and hyped headsets out there, and narrowed our final list down to eight that we like.Take a look at our picks in the following pages.....

Open a magazine or go to a Web site and you'll be berated with Top Ten Lists; but what about all the failures, mishaps, disastrous and worthless creations along the way? We've decided to balance things out a bit and give you a rundown of the worst gadgets ever created. Trust us: You will be disappointed. Very disappointed.

Should You Get a Mac or a PC?

Mac or PC – it's the perennial debate for anyone looking to buy a new computer (or win an argument). Passionate and valid points exist in both camps, but it ultimately boils down to your personal tastes, needs, and budget. We played around with all shapes and sizes of Macs (Mini, iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro) and PCs (Gateway One desktop, Gateway M-Series laptops, Lenovo x300 laptop, Acer Ferrari 1100, Sony TP Series, and Dell XPS M2010) to figure out which type of computer was best on a variety of fronts. Much to our surprise, not all of our findings turned out as we expected....

How to Look Better in Photos

Summer is almost here and that means taking lots of snapshots, but making people look pretty in pictures is no easy job -- professional photographers get paid lots and lots of money to do just that (more than any other creative professionals, actually). Even so, you can improve the look of just about anyone (including yourself) with some basic photo-taking and -editing tips, the best of which we've compiled here. All of our suggestions can be executed using simple, inexpensive point-and-shoot cameras and free post-processing software: iPhoto on Mac, or Picasa on PC are our top choices. (Other apps, such as Adobe Photoshop Elements [PC/Mac] and GIMP [PC/Mac/Linux] are great as well, but the former will cost you a few bucks.)

1. Look younger

If you want to make your subjects look younger than they are, focus on the skin tone: Our number one tip is to use flashes in sunlight. It might seem counter-intuitive, but flashes override the shadows that overhead sunlight might cast on faces, making for pronounced under-eye and chin shadows. Also, putting anything white or translucent over the flash while indoors (or up close) will soften the light, making for much smoother skin tones through softer lighting. If you're in a bar, for example, just hold a napkin in front of the flash (in your camera settings, you might also want to turn the flash power up, if that's an option). You can also use the "brush" function -- usually indicated by a brush icon -- on most photo programs (such as those mentioned above) to virtually brush over age-revealing wrinkles, dark circles under the eyes, and blemishes.

Best Gadgets for the Beach (Video)

We may be talking Back-to-School already, but summer is still very much with us, at least if the hot and humid August weather is to be believed. And that means that the beaches are alive and well and just waiting to be pounced upn. Geeks that we are, we can't help but bring gadgets every with us, including the beach, which is exactly what we did in the above video. Check it out.

Five Online Dates You Should Avoid

Online Dating Profile
Everyone's doing it - over 40 percent of U.S. singles are finding matches online. That's more than 40 million single Americans cruising the Internet looking for love (based on census results that say there are over 100 million single Americans).

So the Internet must be a great place to find true love, right? Not so fast. While online dating can be a great way to find someone new, dating sites are littered with scam artists, cheaters, and straight-up liars.

Now, this doesn't mean you should avoid online dating altogether -- just don't believe everything you see out there. In order to help sort out the winners from the losers, we've compiled a list of the top five types of online daters you should definitely avoid, along with some tips to help you save some heartache. Be careful out there, and good luck!

1. Liars

In a recent survey, it was found that most online profiles contain some sort of lie, whether it's the person's age or -- in some cases -- relationship status. White lies -- adding an inch to height or dropping a couple pounds -- are the most common and not a big deal to most people.

Consider these facts according to the April 2007 issue of Proceedings of Computer/Human Interaction:
  • About 52.6 percent of men lie about their height, as do 39 percent of women.
  • Slightly more women lie about their weight (64.1 percent) than men (60.5 percent).
  • When it comes to age, 24.3 percent men lie compared with 13.1 percent of women.
When it comes to misrepresenations of age or relationship status, be careful or you could get seriously burned. In one recent case, a woman met a man on a popular dating site with whom she immediately hit it off. She even put her life on hold to go with him to Dubai when he was transferred for work. Eleven months into the relationship, she came across an e-mail -- from his son! What's more, the e-mail said something about "Mom" saying hi. In one fell swoop, our poor girl found out the man she met online was not only a father -- he was married! She moved back to the United States and has given up on online dating since.

How to Avoid Them:

Ask questions. Though it may be listed on someone's profile, someone's age is fair game in the questions department, so feel free to ask your potential date how old (or young!) they are. You may find that 35 suddenly becomes 42. While you don't want to ask too many questions and scare the person away, it's perfectly fair to verify the big things: age, weight, height, and -- most of all -- whether or not that person is, in fact, single. Half the time, people lie on their profiles to get people interested -- nine times out of ten, someone will level with you about their stats once you show some real interest, since they know they might have a chance of meeting you in person.

'A-Z' and Other Celebrity Hackers (Gallery)

A-Z, the Celebrity HackerYou've probably never heard of A-Z, but you probably have heard of some of his handiwork. A-Z is a world-renowned hacker (profiled here in USA Today), who became rich and infamous by producing software for cyber-criminals. These applications allow the hackers to steal data and money, as well as hijack target computers.

In his early career, A-Z spent time developing and spreading viruses around the Internet primarily for bragging rights, much like other young hackers. By 2007, however, he became a celebrity in the world of cyber-crime for creating ZeuS, a program that is quite adept at sneaking past security measures such as firewalls and anti-virus scanners. ZeuS has been used to steal log-on information for a Russian stock trading site, hold personal files for ransom, and steal sensitive information from online employment site Monster Jobs.

In 2007, A-Z partnered with a German gang on a heist of Hollywood proportions. A complex two phase scheme -- involving a customized version of ZeuS and thousands of infected PCs working in unison -- netted the unholy cyber-alliance an estimated $6 million.

A-Z is far from the first hacker to make himself famous (or, more accurately, infamous). It's an increasingly popular job, according to Nick Newman, a computer crime specialist, who told USA Today: "All you need is a computer, Internet access and programming skills, and now you have a viable career path in front of you."

And, if you check out our gallery of other notorious electronic criminal masterminds, you'll see that many of them parlayed their hacking experience into some pretty decent legit jobs when they got out of prison! [From: USA Today]

The 19-year-old North Dakota native can be seen on the awesome HBO miniseries 'Generation Kill,' the latest project by the creators of our longtime addiction 'The Wire.' Boy's been busy breaking the hearts of middle American youths and shooting the CW's new 90210, but he still found time for a tell-all interview with Switched. Read on, as Kellan reveals the identities of his favorite gadgets, his Wii habits, and his most embarrassing cell-phone debacle.

What gadgets do you always bring with you to the set?

I really do love having my toys to occupy my time between scenes. I usually will bring my Playstation PSP to play EA sports games and other adventure games. I'm playing the new 'God of War' which has the right amount of action to get lost in. I also have a video mp3 player which I use to watch 'South Park' episodes, and movies as well as listen to music.

What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love/hate about it?

I just recently gave up my favorite phone the Palm Treo for a Samsung Instinct. I love touch screen phones as it gives me the right amount of control over a simple phone. I use my phone for everything from scheduling my life to listening to music, so it's more than just a phone. My new Instinct is cool because it has GPS, a full touch screen, and I can check my email when on set, but I would love to see how it stacks up to the new iPhone 3G. So I might just have to get one of those and pick the better of the two to keep. I really do miss the Treo's keyboard though. I got so good using the keyboard while driving to the point where I could text paragraphs without ever looking down. I loved being able to feel the keys. Also I just found out that the Instinct does not have PDF capability so I cannot read my scripts and sides on my phone anymore but it's worth everything--my "Instinct" is to keep it.

Who's the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?

I sent a text to my brother, we talk all day long. I think I texted him asking him to buy tickets to see 'The Dark Knight' in IMAX. I can't wait to see this movie; I hear Heath Ledger could be up for an Oscar for his role as the Joker...I think it's going to be that good!

Pineapple Express' Gary Cole Has Simple Tastes, and a Drum Kit

Gary Cole's been in a bazillion movies and TV shows and has played all kinda roles. Lately he's busied himself with the much-anticipated stoner comedy 'Pineapple Express', which opens this Wednesday nationwide. Though we remember him best as Katherine's creepy ex on 'Desperate Housewives', we just interviewed him about his gadget-usage and he seems like a really nice guy! He even gave his old drum kit to the kid next door! Cole is unpretentious about gadgetry, reserving his tech-splurges for HDTV and his latest drums. Read on for the deets.

What gadgets do you always bring with you to the set?

Just a phone, to take care of business and household-related things, but nothing more "tech-y" than an occasional DVD. I enjoy my quiet time while on set!

What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love/hate about it?

I just got a new LG phone from Verizon. I love this one because it works, unlike my last one (an archaic Nokia), but at the end of the day it's just a phone – I have no romantic attachment to it.

Who's the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?

I have never sent a text message before. At least, not on purpose. If I need to speak to someone, I'll call them.

Where do you go pretty much every time you get online?

Teddi and I share an AOL e-mail account, but other than that I'm pretty old-fashioned and read the paper for my news and gossip!

What annoys you most about your iPod, cell phone, or laptop?

The standard gripes – losing power, no reception, dropped calls. I literally just got this new phone so I have no complaints...yet.

Best Hi-Tech School Supplies

It's not here quite yet, but it's coming. You know, the time when you (or someone you birthed) heads back into the somber fray of study, working tirelessly to make ample use of the thousands invested in his or her education. Here are a few ways to make the learning process a bit more enjoyable (depending on whether you're the spender or the spendee).

Apple MacBook/Gateway P Series

Picking the right laptop is difficult, particularly on the PC side (on the Mac side, a MacBook is usually powerful enough for anything, except video work, for which a MacBook Pro is much better suited.) On the PC side, our pick is Gateway's P-Series notebooks. They can handle gaming, movies and media (and "word processing"), and really any reasonable task you throw at them (including video and graphics work).

Though a bit bulkier, the full-sized keyboards on the 17-inch screen makes writing papers a bit more comfortable. If you're a young Luddite or don't play many games, then go with a Mac; if you're a gamer and online-app head, then your only choice is a PC.

Switched Questionnaire: Robert Englund (aka Freddy Krueger)

We know Robert Englund mostly as the scary guy that traumatized us throughout early childhood in the legendary Freddy Krueger movies. Dude usually gets typecast in creepy horror flicks (keep an eye out for 'Zombie Strippers', coming soon to your mall cineplex!) but he's about to expand his repertoire in 'Red,' a serious small-town drama about a misanthropic war vet whose dog is killed by local delinquents. [Spoiler: Englund does NOT play the war vet, or the delinquents]. Directed by Trygve Allister Diessen and Lucky McKee, 'Red' opens August 8th at artsy theaters in New York and DC.

Switched caught up with Freddy Robert between zombies and dogs and strippers to ask him how he feels about iPods and gadgets and stuff. And like our favorite 80's horror films, he's endearingly old-school and lo-fi. Read more below!

What gadgets do you always bring with you to the set for down-time?

A highlighter pen and Bayer aspirin

What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love/hate about it?

A black colored LG that my wife got me. I am too old and too blind to do more than make calls. I can't read the screen with the sun behind me.

Who's the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?

I emailed my producer in Italy about the movie I will be directing there this fall.

Where do you go pretty much every time you get online?

RobertEnglund.com, naturally. And IMDB.

What annoys you most about your iPod, cell phone, or laptop?

Hard to read outside when there is glare.

Name one thing you wish your iPod/cellphone/laptop could do that it doesn't do now?

Voice recognition. I am all thumbs.

What upcoming gadget can you not wait to get your hands on?

LG Scarlet flatscreen

You're stranded on a desert island: What gadget do you bring?

Swiss Army knife and Bear Grylls

What's the most-played song or artist on your iPod?

Don't have or want an iPod

BlackBerry, Sidekick, or Treo?

Blueberries are excellent on salads, and full of antioxidants.

Are you getting an iPhone? If so, why?

[Yes, since it has] GPS and is useful internationally. [It's] much smaller than our laptop.

What's the longest time you've ever spent playing a video game in one sitting and what game was it?

I played Galaxian for two hours in the late 1980s.

Mac or PC?

Mac. They are cooler and easier to use for us techno-weenies.

5 Questions To Ask Before You Buy GPS

GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation devices -- those talking screens with maps that give you real-time directions to wherever you're going (as you're going there) -- used to be the province of the well-to-do with high-end cars. But nowadays, real-time navigation technology is available for all budgets in all sorts of shapes, sizes and feature packages. So which type of GPS is for you? Should you spend a mere $2.99 to get directions on your cell phone or splurge up to $500 for a high-end portable? Are factory-installed navigation systems you get with a new car better than a standalone portable? Do you really need an MP3 player with your traffic directions? For answers to these questions and more, check out the five things to consider before you buy a GPS, which we've organized by the most commonly asked questions on the following pages (click below to get to tip number 1).
